A properly fitted ultralight manual wheelchairs can improve function and mobility for people with disabilities of all ages. How an individual sits and fits in the wheelchair is a key predictor of safety, comfort and independence, and, over the long term, can impact the likelihood of secondary injuries. Thus, a wheelchair must be configured to its rider to ensure a balanced ride. This course will address the recommendations set forth by the Consortium of Spinal Cord Medicine and RESNA to stress the importance of an optimally configured manual wheelchair.

This program is designed for Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Assistive Technology Professionals, and Medical Suppliers/Providers.

Instructor Information

Thomas Halka, MOT, OTR, ATP is a registered occupational therapist who graduated from Texas Woman’s University in 2007 with a Master’s in Occupational Therapy. From 2011-2019, Thomas practiced at the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the VA Medical Center in Dallas, TX where he provided complex seating and mobility solutions for veterans with SCI/D and multiple sclerosis. Thomas earned his ATP from RESNA in 2018. He served on the planning committee for the PVA Summit and Healthcare Expo from 2016-2018. In 2019, Thomas joined Permobil as a regional clinical education manager; covering Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. While in his current role, he has had the opportunity to teach several labs and lectures for students at various professional clinical programs, and he has presented at several regional conferences in the territory he supports.
